Apple Starts a Free Repair Program to Fix ‘Flexgate’ Issues on 2016 MacBook Pro
If you’re one of the unlucky ones that have experienced the dreadful “flexgate” issue with your 2016 MacBook Pro, you might be in for a pleasant surprise. Apple is now offering free repairs to every owner of that model affected.
The 2016 MacBook lineup was a total redesign of the MacBook as we know it, and that’s bound to cause some rough edges sooner or later. As those devices have aged, they’ve shown unexpected defects like the community-dubbed “flexgate”. What the flexgate essentially is, is that the backlight of the LCD display on the machine starts to unevenly distribute light. Reportedly, this is caused by opening and closing the lid on the MacBook enough times for the connector cables to loosen up and even break altogether, leaving you with a dead screen.
After years of ignoring the issue and denying it altogether, meanwhile fixing the modern models to not have this issue, the Cupertino company is finally taking a step in the right direction. Apple is now offering a free repair service for everyone affected by the defect.
Apple is citing that only “a very small percentage” of MacBook Pro 2016 users have experienced the issue, however, Apple mentioned the same thing during the iPhone’s “bendgate” a few years back while quietly fixing the issue with an upcoming model… without telling anyone.
Our Take
Apple is charging premium prices for what they claim are premium products, however, almost every device it is putting out the last few years is affected by some major defect. Apple should either take responsibility and focus more on real-world testing or stop charging such ridiculous prices which people sometimes don’t even get a warranty replacement for.
What are your thoughts on this? Is Apple’s “unbeatable quality” slowly fading away in favour of polished surfaces with defects left and right? Let us know in the comments below. Also Read:Forward Calls on iPhone Xs/X/8/7/6s for Busy Time
